Todd Fearer - Keynote Address

Presented by Todd Fearer

Run time: Self paced

We planned to have Todd Fearer give our Keynote Address this year, but social distancing efforts have changed those plans. Hopefully we can have him back next year though. Todd was kind enough to direct us to some informative videos on this website titled Creating Wildlife Habitats by Appalacian Mountains Joint Venture. We hope you enjoy them.

Todd joined the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture (AMJV) in 2010 as the Science Coordinator and became Coordinator in 2012. Prior to working with the AMJV, he was an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas’ School of Forest Resources. He received his B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science with minors in Forest Science and International Agriculture from Penn State University. He then went on to obtain both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Wildlife Science from Virginia Tech. Todd’s office is located in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center with the VA.

Old School Bird Names Puzzler - Day 2

Presented by James Wheat, KOS Member

Run time: Self paced

Bird names have changed over the years as the science of taxonomy and genetics have improved our understanding of the relationships among birds. Some of these changes lump species together, while others split species.

Have you ever heard a bird called something that was confusing to you because it wasn't referred to in today's naming conventions? For example, what bird do you think of when you hear the names Bog-pumper, Dunk-a-doo, Indian Hen, or Stake-driver? These puzzlers test your knowledge of old school bird names.

Click the image below to try the Puzzler for Day 2!

The answers for today's puzzler will be posted tomorrow on the Daily Updates page.
